Film and Television
We have many years of experience in the representation of clients in all aspects of the film and television process from acquisition of rights to financing, production and distribution including serving as production counsel on numerous films and television shows. We represent production companies, distributors, writers, directors and talent in non-fiction series, reality tv and mainstream and independent films.
We also represent authors and publishers in the licensing of book-to-movie deals and the licensing of screenplay and teleplays for writers and production companies. We worked with PBS on its 2015 two-hour program based on E.O. Wilson’s Of Ants and Men; American Experience on a series based on the West Virginia coal mine wars based in part on the book The Devil Is Here in These Hills: West Virginia’s Mine Wars and the Meaning of Freedom written by James Green and with Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and Annapurna Films, on the licensing of the dramatic rights to Anand Giridharadas’ book The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, published by W.W. Norton in 2014, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
We represented the sports writer Glenn Stout in the optioning of his book The Young Woman and the Sea to Jerry Bruckheimer at Paramount; Captain Richard Phillips in the Columbia Pictures’ 2013 Captain Phillips film starring Tom Hanks based on his book, A Captain’s Duty; American Experience’s This Republic of Suffering based on the book of the same name by Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust and produced by Ric Burns (2012); Fox 2000’s feature series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid based on the books by Jeff Kinney, including merchandising licenses; Public Enemies based on the book The Vendetta: FBI Hero Melvin Purvis’s War Against Crime and J. Edgar Hoover’s War Against Him by Alston Purvis as a feature film produced by Misher Films and Universal Studios, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale (2009); and Walden Media’s Flat Stanley, based on the character created by the late Richard C. Brown (aka Jeff Brown) which is currently in development; and with the late Howard Zinn to complete The People Speak a dramatic series based on A Peoples History of the United States and co-produced by Chris Moore, starring Josh Brolin, Viggo Mortensen, Marisa Tomei, Danny Glover, etc., which aired on the History Channel in the late Fall of 2009 and its British spin-off produced by Colin Firth which aired in October of 2010 and I.M. Pei Building China Modern which premiered on American Masters in the early Spring of 2010.
We have represented the independent producers or talent of many of WGBH and PBS series, including Eyes on the Prize; This Old House; American Experience, NOVA, etc.
